How to Get Cited by Microsoft Copilot
Copilot runs on the Bing index. Optimizing for it is closer to classic technical SEO than to the prompt-writing advice most GEO posts repeat.

Microsoft Copilot answers are retrieved from the Bing index and then summarized with citations. That has two practical consequences: Bingbot is the crawler that decides whether you exist, and Bing's indexing speed decides whether a fix shows up this week or next month.
1. Confirm Bingbot is allowed and not WAF-blocked
Bingbot obeys robots.txt, and it is also the user agent most likely to be caught by aggressive bot-protection rules. Check both layers:
robots.txthas noDisallowcovering the path, forUser-agent: Bingbotor*.- Your CDN or WAF does not return 403/429 to the Bingbot user agent.
The robots.txt Auditor covers the first, and the live scanner covers the second by actually fetching your page as a bot.
2. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools
Index status, crawl errors and URL submission all live there, and Copilot inherits whatever Bing has. If your site was never verified, you are flying blind on the one index that feeds the assistant. Verification also unlocks IndexNow, which matters next.
3. Publish index updates immediately with IndexNow
Waiting for Bingbot to rediscover an updated page is the main reason fixes seem to do nothing for weeks. IndexNow tells Bing (and other participating engines) that a URL changed, at the moment you change it. A single HTTP request per URL, no authentication, no quota games.
Wire it into your deploy: after every build, submit the URLs you regenerated. This site does exactly that — see the site map for what a fully indexed structure looks like, and treat IndexNow as the deployment step that makes edits count.
4. Structure for summarization, not for word count
Copilot composes an answer from retrieved passages and cites them inline. The same extraction rules apply as elsewhere:
- Answer the question in the first sentence of the section.
- Keep sections short and self-contained.
- Use real tables for comparisons and numbered lists for procedures.
- State concrete numbers, dates and names rather than adjectives.
The content structure guide has the full ruleset.
5. Make the page's identity machine-readable
Bing leans on structured data for entity understanding. Organization, WebSite, Article with an accurate dateModified, and breadcrumbs give the index a consistent picture of who you are and what the page is about. The schema guide provides validated examples.
Keep the visible page and the markup consistent — mismatched names, missing dates and FAQ blocks that do not appear on the page are the fastest way to have structured data ignored.
6. Track Bing separately from Google
Bing indexes a different subset of your site at a different speed. A page can rank in Google's top five and be entirely absent from Bing, which means Copilot can never cite it. Check Bing Webmaster Tools coverage monthly for your money pages, not once at launch.
7. Then check the rest of the site
The free tools here test one URL. If you want per-page access plus noindex traps, broken links and thin-context pages across up to 50 URLs, the Pro Deep Report returns a prioritized P0–P3 fix list in a few minutes for $49 one-time.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking Bingbot affect Copilot?
Yes. Copilot retrieves from the Bing index, so a robots.txt rule or WAF block against Bingbot removes your pages from Copilot answers even if Google still ranks you normally. The two indexes are independent.
Is IndexNow required?
It is not required to be indexed, but it is the fastest way to get a changed URL re-crawled by Bing. Submission is a single unauthenticated POST per URL and can be wired into your build so it happens automatically on deploy.
Do I need different content for Copilot than for ChatGPT?
No. Both are retrieval-plus-summarization systems, so the same properties help: crawl access, answer-first passages, tables for comparisons, concrete facts, a visible date and consistent structured data. Optimize the fundamentals once and it transfers.
Why is a page indexed in Google but missing in Bing?
Bing crawls at a different rate and applies its own quality and duplication filters. Often the page is orphaned, thin, or was published after Bing's last pass. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the URL, enable IndexNow and re-check in a week.
